Brief Legal Advice on Vanuatu Immigration Laws

Vanuatu, officially known as the Republic of Vanuatu, is an island country comprising 13 principal islands and many smaller ones located in the South Pacific Ocean. The islands stretch approximately 400 miles (650 km) north to south in an irregular Y-shape. The Republic of Vanuatu became an independent state in 1980, with the name ‘Vanuatu’ meaning ‘Our Land Forever’. It is a parliamentary democracy with a written constitution declaring that the head of the Republic, known as the President, symbolizes the unity of the nation.

Port-Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, is both the largest city and main commercial center. The natives of Vanuatu, called ni-Vanuatu, are primarily of Melanesian descent, with some Polynesian populations on outlying islands and other minorities. Bislama is the national language, along with English and French as official languages. The economy is supported by agriculture, tourism, offshore financial services, and cattle raising. Subsistence agriculture has traditionally been Vanuatu’s economic base, complemented by an elaborate exchange network within and between the islands.
